I don't claim to be an expert on computer programs, but here's a few I like to use.

Ubuntu Linux - Free alternative to the Windows operating system that is feature rich, heavily customizable, and less resource hungry than its Windows equivalent. I switched and never looked back.
Firefox - A webstandard compliant web browser made of WIN.
GIMP - Want a powerful image editing program but don't have deep pockets? GIMP can suit your needs.
OpenOffice.org - Open Office is a free alternative to Microsoft Office that is just as powerful.
